McKee Botanical Garden
This impressive 18-acre attraction was originally opened in 1932 and featured a virtual jungle of orchids, exotic and native trees, monkeys, and birds. After years of neglect, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and renovated; you can now again experience the full charms of this little Eden, featuring over 10,000 native and tropical plants, including one of Florida’s largest (and most photogenic) collections of waterlilies. The garden also hosts traveling exhibits and, in 2020, they debuted the Children’s Garden, designed by renowned landscape architect Emannuel Didier, featuring a fun and whimsical way to get kids off their iPads. The Garden Café (Tues-Sat 11am-3pm, Sun noon-3pm), is a lush, peaceful place for some quiche and homemade brownies. Admission to the gardens is not required.
