Planning a trip to Vesuvian Archaeological Area
Getting to Vesuvius
The Circumvesuviana railway (tel. 800-053939 toll-free within Italy; www.vesuviana.it) runs from Naples, Sorrento, and Poggiomarino/Sarno to Vesuvius. From Naples, trains stop the 12-minute ride costs 1.10€. From Sorrento, the journey can take up to an hour and 20 minutes (you have to change) and costs 3.40€. Once at the station, you can then get a shuttle bus to Vesuvius or a taxi (confirm the price before getting in).
A good alternative is taking a taxi from Naples (flat rate of 90€ includes round-trip transport and 2-hr. wait), or a car service from any location.
From Naples, another excellent option is a guided tour.
Note: All transportation gets you only as far as the park entrance at 1,017m (3,337 ft.) in altitude; the trails are not wheelchair accessible.
