This theater in the University of Victoria's Student Union Building, about a 15-minute drive from downtown, is the city's home for outstanding films. With Dolby stereo sound and the best popcorn in town (with real butter!), Cinecenta shows a nightly schedule of art films from around the world, as well as Hollywood blockbusters, classics, documentaries, children's matinees, opera productions from London's Covent Garden, and special showings that feature preview talks and post-show discussions with visiting and local filmmakers. During the year Cinecenta also hosts weekly series that are organized geographically (with films from Quebec, Latin America, China, Japan, and other places around the world) or by political themes. Past series have focused on the environment, First Nations, and gay and lesbian issues. The month before the Oscars, Cinecenta shows almost all of the nominees.
