For three decades the Siegel brothers have served up equal parts Italian comfort food and theatrical service in their noisy, crowded, yet beloved joint downtown. Campy-titled menu items include Forrest Gump (pan-seared duck breast with spicy marinara), Jaws (Pacific snapper with parsley, garlic, and butter), and Captain Nemo's Bowl (Saltspring Island mussels in tomato, garlic, basil, and white wine broth). The walls are crowded with photos of locals and the Siegels' famous friends in the literary and entertainment world, including Saul Bellow, Allen Ginsberg, Susan Sarandon, and Bruno Kirby. There's live jazz and klezmer music at night, and the cheesecake—there are four varieties: New York, marble, chocolate, and espresso—is not to be missed. The Siegels brought cheesecake to Victoria and call Pag's "The House that Cheesecake Built" for good reason.
