Old Coast Guard Station Museum
This 1903 Life-Saving Station turned museum tells the history of Virginia's coastal communities and its maritime heritage. The white clapboard structure looks like a comfortable house, except for the four-story tower where the crew used to watch for foundering ships. The galleries tell the history of gallant men who stood tall in the face of danger. On the first floor, artifacts and photos relate the history of the United States Life-Saving Association, which later became the U.S. Coast Guard, with photos and explanations of different units throughout the Tidewater area. The second-story gallery focuses more on coastal history, from shipwrecks to the areas role in World War II to the beach itself. Special exhibitions and occasional lectures round out the experience, often with a fun look at topics such as Coast Guard mascot dogs and local lore. During summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, costumed guides take visitors on an hourlong walk through Virginia Beach telling stories of shipwrecks, ghosts, and pirates.
