Restaurants in Volterra
A Cappuccino, a Gelato & a Glass of Wine -- Right on the main square, with a few tables outside, sits the very friendly little Bar Priori, Piazza Priori 2 (3496-95-1770), our regular coffee-break stop. There's nowhere better than L'Incontro, Via Matteoti 18 (tel. 0588-80-500), for a gelato or relaxed pit stop, with homemade pastries. Their artisan chocolate is also pretty good. Our favorite enoteca in town is grottolike La Vena di Vino, Via Don Minzoni 30 (tel. 0588-81-491; www.lavenadivino.com), which has an especially good range of reds plus cheese platters to accompany them. Glasses range from 2.50€ to 8€.

Da Bado
Owner Giacomo’s mom, Lucia, is in the kitchen of this neighborhood favorite in San Lazzero, just outside the walls a short walk from the Etruscan museum. She prepares a few daily choices that often include zuppa volterrana (bread and vegetable soup) and baccalà rifatto (pan-fried…$Around Town - Modern Tuscan
Enoteca del Duca
At Volterra's best restaurant, you’ll have a choice of surroundings: the elegant, high-ceilinged dining room, a bottle-lined enoteca, or a pretty patio out back. Wherever you choose to enjoy them, the offerings are innovative and refined takes on Tuscan classics. All the salamis and…$$Around Town - Tuscan
Il Sacco Fiorentino
This establishment features a Tuscan menu with international touches while remaining a moderately priced and friendly neighborhood hangout. The traditional pappardelle (wide pasta) with wild boar and porcini ragù is excellent, as is the odd tagliatelle con pollo, peperoni e curry,…$$Around Town - Tuscan
Lo Sgherro
There's no ceremony at this neighborhood trattoria -- just solid, regional cooking at prices that have gone out of fashion elsewhere in Tuscany -- where your order is hollered through a hole-in-the-wall at chef/owner Dario in the kitchen. Pasta staples are all present -- lepre (hare)…$Around Town - Volterran/Tuscan
Osteria Trattoria La Pace
No restaurant in Volterra can boast of such a long provenance, serving since 1600 and in the hands of the same family since 1939. The old brick walls and vaults look just as they must have 400 years ago, and the kitchen follows suit with perfectly prepared versions of such Volterra…$Around Town
