The Paua World, 54 Kent St., Carterton (tel. 06/379-4247; www.pauaworld.com), is an attraction in its own right. It gets over 50,000 visitors a year and has a huge range of jewelry and souvenirs at factory prices. It's open daily and there are factory tours and video presentations to enjoy. Martinborough Cheese Shop, 8 Kitchener St., Martinborough (tel. 06/306-8383), features specialty cheeses and local delicacies, including wines and olive oils, and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Saratoga Dairy Goats, Caveland Road, Gladstone, Masterton (tel. 06/372-7074; www.saratoga.co.nz), produces handcrafted goat cheeses; while Kingsmeade Cheese, Olivers Road, Masterton (tel. 06/377-5252; www.kingsmeadecheese.co.nz) is the medal-winning maker of sheep's milk cheese. There are nearly 20 olive-oil producers in the Wairarapa; two worth visiting are Olivo Olive Grove, Hinakura Road, Martinborough (tel. 06/306-9074; www.olivo.co.nz), which has award-winning extra-virgin and infused olive oils, with tastings and sales most weekends; and Juno Olives, 1931 St. Hwy. 2, Greytown (tel. 06/304-8895; www.juno-olives.co.nz), which is open weekends for tours and sales, or by appointment.
