Established in 1790, it is one of the oldest cemeteries in Warsaw. The 43-hectare (106-acre) ground is filled with ornate and grand tombs, topped with elaborate sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. A mausoleum holds the ashes of those who perished in concentration camps, and the "Avenue of Merit" has the tombs of famous citizens. Among those buried here are Nobel Prize winner Wadysaw Reymont and the second President of the Republic of Poland, Stanisaw Wojciechowski. At all times of the year, the cemetery is well-kept, but on All Saints' Day (Nov 1), the traditional day for Poles to visit cemeteries, the compound is ablaze with candlelight and filled with visitors until way past midnight. The Jewish Cemetery is within walking distance from the Powazki Cemetery and can be covered in one visit.
