Pizzeria Paradiso has been around since before you were born. Okay, well, certainly before the gourmet pizza trend was born. It’s 28 years old and remains a favorite among a wide field of contenders. Paradiso cooks its pizzas in a domed, wood-burning stone oven that can withstand 650-degree heat, which gives the pizza a light but doughier crust than its rivals. The pies come in 9- and 12-inch sizes, and the 44-item toppings list includes everything imaginable, from mussels to vegan mozzarella. Paninis and salads get high marks as well. Pizzeria Paradiso serves wine and also has a Birreria, where patrons interested in microbrews and handcrafted beers can select from 13 drafts and more than 200 bottles. Paradiso’s other locations are in Georgetown, at 3282 M St. NW (tel. 202/337-1245), and in Old Town Alexandria, at 124 King St. (tel. 703/837-1245).
