Area accommodations make it easy to get out and explore the wilderness. Both Trophy Mountain Buffalo Ranch and Helmcken Falls Lodge and the Wells Gray Guest Ranch, Wells Gray Road (tel. 250/674-2792 or 250/674-2774; www.wellsgrayranch.com), offer a wide variety of recreational options, including horseback riding, canoeing, rafting, and hiking trips in summer, and dog sledding, cross-country snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing in winter.

Interior Whitewater Expeditions (tel. 800/661-7238 in Canada, or 250/674-3727; www.interiorwhitewater.bc.ca) offers half- to 5-day rafting and kayaking trips. Consider a 3-hour white-water screamer on the Clearwater River for C$95, or a more leisurely 3-hour float down the North Thompson for C$75.

Wells Gray Chalets & Wilderness Adventures (tel. 888/SKI-TREK [754-8735] or 250/587-6444; www.skihike.com) offers backcountry hut-to-hut hiking and cross-country ski trips. Ian Eakins and Tay Briggs run this family-owned company that maintains three chalets nestled deep in the park. Each sleeps up to 12 and is equipped with a kitchen, bedding, sauna, and propane lighting and heat. It's the best of both worlds: You can experience untrammeled wilderness and great rural hospitality. Two of the nicest people you could hope to have as guides, Ian and Tay are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and history of the park. They offer guided or self-catered hiking and cross-country ski packages as well as guided 3- and 6-day canoe trips that are custom-designed for families. Guided summer hikes are roughly C$140 to C$150 per person per day; guided winter cross-country ski trips are roughly C$180 per person per day.
