Langebaan has grown exponentially over the years: This is no quaint fishing village, but a sprawling town, hugely popular with watersports fans and South Africans during the summer holidays. If you'd rather be based in utter tranquillity, book a rustic cottage at Churchhaven, a cluster of cottages right on the aquamarine lagoon; bookings are through www.perfecthideaways.co.za (ask for Whaler's Way Cottage).
The only South African-graded five-star accommodations in Langebaan itself is Harrison's House (tel. 022/772-0727 or 084/806-6322; R950-R1,100 double), a compact boutique guesthouse with a splash pool, small gym, and some great views (the upstairs luxury lagoon room is the one to ask for). No children under 12 are permitted, and if you like your space and want to be closer to the beach, you'd be better off at The Farmhouse . If you're on a budget, a good alternative is Friday's Island (tel. 022/772-2506; www.fridayisland.co.za; sea-front-facing units R760-R960). The simple white-washed units are right on Langebaan beach, there's a young and very friendly vibe, and tanned locals frequent the restaurant for calamari steaks and light fare. The northern side of town is estate territory (developments are fenced off and gated for security), and apartment blocks line private beaches. If you don't mind the brasher vibe, try Crystal Lagoon Lodge (tel. 022/772-0550; R780-R1,280). Opened in April 2009, room nos. 1 and 4 look large and comfortable; the beach is just a few meters away, and swimming is safe.
