By Plane –– Vincenzo Florio Airport at Birgi, 15km (9 miles) from the center of Trapani (tel. 0923/610-111), is the island’s third-largest and the main Ryanair hub for Sicily from the U.K. From here, AST (tel. 091/620-8111) buses run hourly into Trapani (fare 5€).

By Car –– From Palermo, the A29 autostrada is the fastest route southwest into Trapani, about a 1 1/2-hour drive. Marsala is another 45 minutes south on Route 115; the drive from Trapani up to Erice takes about half an hour. Selinunte is 2 hours’ drive from Palermo via A29 and E90 (exit at Castelvetrano); the drive between Trapani and Selinunte takes a little over an hour.

By Train –– There’s frequent daily train service (tel. 89/2021) between Palermo, Trapani, and Marsala. The journey from Palermo to Trapani takes 2 1/2 hours; it’s another 30 minutes on to Marsala. Trapani’s main station at Piazza Stazione offers luggage storage. For Selinunte, take the train to Castelvetrano, 23km (14 miles) from the ruins, where you can board a Salemi bus (tel. 0923/981-120) for the final 20-minute lap of the journey.

By Bus –– From Palermo, Salemi (tel. 0923-981-120) runs long-distance bus service to Trapani airport (1 1/2 hrs.), Marsala (1 3/4 hours), and Selinunte (1 3/4 hr.; change buses at Castelvetrano for another 20 min. trip to ruins). AST Buses (tel. 0923/21021) run between Marsala and Trapani (Piazza Montalto) three times a day, a 35-minute journey, and also go from Trapani’s Piazza Montalto up to historic Erice (daily 6:40am–7:30pm, fare 2.40€), a winding, uphill 50-minute trip.

By Boat –– Trapani is a major embarkation point for ferries and hydrofoils. Most depart for the Egadi Islands of Marettimo, Levanzo, and Favignana. Service is also available to the islands of Ustica and Pantelleria, and to the mainland ports of Civitavecchia near Rome and Tunisia in North Africa. Ferries depart from the docks near Piazza Garibaldi. Service is offered by Liberty Lines (tel. 0923/873-813) or Grimaldi (tel. 081/496-444).
