GETTING THERE & GETTING AROUND

It’s possible to arrive in Whangārei by plane or bus, but accessing other areas of Northland, even by guided trip, is difficult from Whangārei, unless you have ample time to spare. Buslink (tel. 09/438-7142) connects Whangārei to regional centers throughout the entirety of Northland. To maximize your time, it’s best to either hire a car in Auckland or rent one upon arrival in Whangārei.

By Car: Whangārei is a two-hour drive from Auckland. Major car rental companies have offices at both the Auckland and Whangārei airports.

By Plane: Whangārei is a 35-minute flight from Auckland with Air New Zealand (tel. 0800/737-000 in NZ), which offers several flights a day. Sunair (tel. 07/575-7799) flies from other North Island regional hubs (such as Gisborne and Hamilton) into Whangārei multiple times a week. Whangārei Passenger Services ( tel. 09/438-6005) will take you into Whangārei, but must be pre-booked.

By Coach (Bus): InterCity (tel. 09/623-1503) passes through Whangārei on its morning and afternoon routes.

Northland’s visitor website is www.northlandnz.com/visit. The Whangārei i-SITE Visitor Centre, 92 Otaika Rd., Whangārei (tel. 09/438-107), is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm weekdays, with extended hours over summer. A second center, Te Manawa The HUB, is located in the Town Basin (tel. 09/430-1188).
