If you decide to stay over, the area along Millwood Avenue (U.S. 50) at I-81 (Exit 313), on the southeast side of town, has Winchester's major shopping mall and several chain restaurants and motels. About half the rooms at the Holiday Inn Historic Gateway (tel. 800/465-4329 or 540/667-3300) face a courtyard with outdoor pool; the hotel's restaurant is one of the town's more popular lunch spots. Also nearby are the venerable Best Western Lee-Jackson Motor Inn (tel. 800/528-1234 or 540/662-4154), a Fairfield Inn & Suites (tel. 800/228-2800 or 540/665-8881), a Wingate by Wyndham (tel. 800/676-4283), and an inexpensive Red Roof Inn (tel. 866/386-4682 or 540/667-5000).

Among the local bed-and-breakfasts, Fuller House Inn & Carriage House, 229 W. Boscowen St. (tel. 877/722-3976 or 540/722-3976; www.fullerhouseinn.com), and Old Water Street Inn, 217 W. Boscowen St. (tel. 866/665-6770 or 540/665-6777; www.oldwaterstreetinn.com), are in the historic district.
