Many visitors prefer to dine in Eton; most of the restaurants and fast-food places along the main street of Windsor, in front of the castle, serve dreary food.

You'll find good, cheap food at the Waterman's Arms, Brocas Street (tel. 01753/861-001), just over the bridge to Eton. Founded in 1542, it's a student favorite. Featured are four varieties of fish and chips, including cod, haddock, plaice, and skate. Platters cost £8 to £11. Meat pies and other main dishes are also served. Our favorite is the beef and Guinness. Special English roast dinners, including beef and lamb, are offered on Sunday, costing £7.95 to £13. It's open daily 11:30am to 11:30pm. MasterCard and Visa are accepted.
