Though Winthrop is primarily a base for skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers, it also has a few interesting shops. For a glimpse of the town's history, visit the Shafer Museum, Castle Avenue (tel. 509/996-2712; www.winthropwashington.com/winthrop/shafer), which consists of a collection of historic buildings from around the area. It's open the last weekend in May to the last weekend in September, Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is by donation. To find the museum, go up Bridge Street from the junction of Wash. 20 and Riverside Drive and turn right on Castle Avenue.
The Methow Valley may not be wine country, but it does have a good little winery that is worth a stop. Lost River Winery, 26 Wash. 20, Winthrop (tel. 509/996-2888; www.lostriverwinery.com), is open for tastings Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 11am to 5pm.
