At least one bus leaves Chengdu's Chadianzi Bus Station daily at 9am (3 1/2 hr.; ¥40/$5.20/£2.60); from Dujiangyan (2 hr.; ¥13/$1.70/85p). The return bus passes through Shawan (also called Wolong Zhen) between 8 and 9am daily; the fare is ¥40 ($5.20/£2.60). Catch it on the main street or at the Panda Museum parking lot.
Getting around the three main sights must usually be done either on foot or by hiring a private taxi (without a meter). The exception is if you hit it just right and for a few yuan can hop on a passing bus from Chengdu. Hetao Ping -- where the breeding center is -- and Shawan (Wolong Town), where the museum and most of the hotels are, are on the same road some 6.5km (4 miles) apart.
Tourist and administrative offices share the Panda Museum building in Shawan, on the road from Chengdu. The museum's parking lot is the terminus for buses from Chengdu. The tourist office can answer questions in English and provide an English-speaking guide to the mountain.
Be sure to carry yuan. There are no foreign exchange services, and credit cards are not accepted.
Buy maps of the reserve at the Panda Museum in Shawan or at the Panda Breeding Station in Hetao Ping for ¥5 (65¢/30p).
