The Commandery
Originally the 11th-century Hospital of St. Wulstan, the Commandery was transformed over the years into a sprawling 15th-century, medieval timber-framed building that served as the country home of the Wylde family. This was the headquarters of King Charles II during the Battle of Worcester in 1651, the last battle in the English Civil War. The Great Hall has a hammer-beam roof and a minstrel's gallery. England's premier Civil War Centre is now situated here. This exciting, interactive, and hands-on museum marvelously incorporates life-size figures, sound systems, and videos to take you through the bloody and turbulent years of England's civil war. You can even try on helmets, handle weapons, and pick up cannon balls. The Commandery also has canal-side tearooms, a picnic area, and a Garden of Fragrance.
