Billed as the world’s only pirate treasure available for viewing, these are the findings of local treasure hunter Barry Clifford. Back in the 1980s, Clifford found evidence of the 1717 wreck of the slave ship Whydah, off the beach in Wellfleet. (Research showed it had been captured by “Black Sam” Bellamy, who was said to have plundered 50 ships.) The museum explores legend and lore associated with the find, displaying weapons, jewelry, and clothing; you can also watch a National Geographic special made at the time of Clifford’s find. An on-site Sea Lab & Learning Center is devoted to the continuing excavation work of freeing the bounty from the encrustations of the sea.
