Historic downtown Yuma isn't exactly a bustling place, and it doesn't exactly abound in historical flavor. In the hope of drawing more visitors, Yuma has upgraded and restored some of its downtown buildings and spruced up its riverfront.

The Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Main St. (tel. 928/373-5202, is next door to the Historic Yuma Theatre and is a gorgeous gallery that could hold its own in Scottsdale. Don't leave town without stopping by to see what's on view. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm in the summer months (June, July and August) and from 10am until 8pm in the fall and spring (September through May). The Yuma Symposium (tel. 928/782-1934), held here each year in February, brings in talented artists from all over the country.
