There aren't any big resorts or many hotels (except for those attached to the area's thermal spa centers) in northwest Croatia, and with few exceptions, facilities resemble hospital housing rather than relaxing resort accommodations. Northwest Croatia also has many privately owned castles and mansions and, until recently, most lay unoccupied in disrepair. However, a few entrepreneurs have been restoring some of these mansions and converting them into boutique hotels. Consequently, the list of small hotels, family-run pansions, private accommodations, agritourism opportunities -- and even spas retrofitted with luxuries -- is growing.
