This stunning cemetery dates back to 1879. Designed by architect Herman Bollé (of Zagreb Cathedral fame), it incorporates arcades and pavilions, trees and flowers, and bouquets and candles. There are many impressive tombs, some created by eminent sculptors such as Ivan Meštrović, Antun Augustinčić, and Dušan Đamonja. Reflecting the multicultural land that Yugoslavia once was, here you’ll see graves marked by Christian crosses, Jewish six-point stars, socialist five-point stars, and elegant Muslim headstones. Among the well-known personalities buried in Mirogoj are former NBA basketball player Dražen Petrović, abstract painter Edo Murtić, and Croatia’s wartime President Franjo Tuđjman. To get to Mirogoj, take the no. 106 bus from Kaptol opposite the cathedral.
