This welcoming, traditional-style hotel is perfectly located for skiers and mountain trekkers—in the center of town, it's just steps from the Sunnegga funicular, around the corner from the Gornergrat train station, and on the bus route for easy access to the Zermatt Express Schwarzsee. Rooms are spacious and traditionally appointed, the majority with balconies looking straight at the Matterhorn. The cuisine in the house restaurant is typically Swiss and of a high standard, served in a beautiful traditional dining room. The wood-clad bar area and fumoir are snug. Also charming and intimate is the bijou basement pool, gym, and wellness area. Best of all, I love the pint-sized patio for balmy summer evenings and wine tastings. All in all, this is an excellent value for its central location. During the day, the Gornergrat train will regularly rumble past your windows but don't let this put you off—it really doesn't disturb the guests and, in a quirky way, it's part of the Swiss experience.
