Established some 30 years ago to revitalize the age-old Zulu traditions, Ilala Weavers today helps more than 2,000 Zulu men and women who practice traditional basket-weaving and beadwork techniques passed down through generations. The stunning works of art they produce are sought after the world over. The Ilala Centre combines a museum featuring the unique and interesting Zulu weaving techniques, along with a fantastic shop that has a huge array of woven, beaded, and carved goods for purchase. The intricate nature of some of the pieces is incredible and certainly worth stopping in to see. To get there, take the Hluhluwe off-ramp off the N2. Just past Hluhluwe Town and the airfield, turn left. Travel northward for approximately 3km (1 3/4 miles), and the road ends and becomes gravel (the tar road curves sharply to the right at this point). Travel along the gravel road for approximately 500m (1,640 ft), and Ilala Weavers/The Orchard Farm Cottages is clearly signposted on the left side (tel. 035/562-0630; www.ilala.co.za).
