Marrakech In May

by hunnybee »

My husband and I plan to go to Marrakech in May for 6-8 days or so and I have to do atlas mountains and sahara a bit. Any 2-3 days? organized tours I can take to cover this? Also, looking for reputable and reliable tour companies info.

Next dilemma, getting from Marrakech to Fez: Is Taxi a safe option or should I just take the flight via Casablanca.

Thanks

Hello HunnyBee,

I am the author of the (now defunct) Frommer's Morocco guidebook, and I hope I can help.

I envisage two options for you:

- visit the Western High Atlas region (Asni, Imlil, Oukaimeden, Ouirgane) from Marrakech as a return day trip or overnight excursion, and visit the Moroccan Sahara (Erfoud, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi region) as a return two-night excursion from Fes. To travel between Marrakech and Fes, I would recommend the train or at the very least a bus, rather than a grand taxi (may include a change of taxis and potentially hazardous) or flying (exorbitantly expensive).

- do a one-way circuit from Marrakech to Fes via the Western High Atlas and Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate, Dades and Todra gorges, Erfoud/Erg Chebbi, Midelt and Ifrane (have a look at a map of Morocco to visualize this itinerary).

Perhaps have a look at the following for more information:

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/western-high-atlas/276941

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/central-morocco/276954

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/morocco/642771

Reputable and reliable tour companies include:

Marrakech-based Desert Majesty (Felicity Greenlaw-Weber); www.desertmajesty.com

Marrakech- and M'hamid- based Sheherezad Ventures (Rachel Blech); www.sheherazadventures.com

Fes-based Concierge Morocco (Helen Ranger); www.conciergemorocco.com

Fes-based Fes Art & Culture Travel (Hassan and Malika el Janah); www.festravel.ma

Marrakech-based Bouaouina Tours (Hassan Bouaouina); www.bouaouinatours.com

I'm sure you will now have more questions than answers, so feel free to post again.

HI Darren, and others reading the post

Based on your input plus my reading, I Did my research and reading and narrowed down to two tour companies (both can accomodate my dates) to do the 5 day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes. And, would love to get more input or Pros and cons on the following:

The companies are:

Desert Majesty

or

Sahara Desert Trips

Hi again HB,

I think the route you've chosen (Marrakech to Fes via the desert) is the best choice, well done. Between the two companies you are looking into, I have only dealt with Felicity and Abdelhadi at Desert Majesty, who have proven to be a well-managed and passionate team who genuinely care about their clients' experience. Feel very free to mention "Frommer's Darren" when dealing with Felicity.

Happy planning,

Darren

Hi Darren,

I am all set to travel to Morocco soon. Booked with Felicity for the 5 day Sahara trip (from Marrakech to Fes) as per your reccomendation, although Felicity cannot accompany us since she will be in Germany at that time celebrating her 65th birthday. Thanks for all your input.

Hi there!

We had our guides take us all the way from Marrkech to Fez - it was so easy.

We also did with them, a two day tour to the Sahara, through the Atlas Mountains. Which was gorgeous. The company was

www.letstravemoroccotours.com and they were really amazing at planning everything and making it really easy.

The guide was Abdou! Ask for him!

Have fun!
