Honeymoon and Genealogy trip

by WebDing »

My soon-to-be hubbie and I are thinking of going on our honeymoon to Austria in September. I've always wanted to see it, as my maternal family is from a small town not far from Salzburg. My fiancee is game, but wants to make sure we really have a plan for tracing the geneaolgy (we're thinking of maybe even registering for some hours with one to help us plan the visit and look up records for us). I'd like to find the cemetary where a lot of my ancestros should be buried and also, if possible, see the houses they might have lived in (from what I know, all came to the US; I don't think any are left there, but I may be wrong). Does anyone have ideas on how best to go about this?

Hello!

Do you know the name of the village in which your family has lived? Without knowing the location, it might be impossible to achieve any results. I would just contact the local tourist office to help you establish contact with the local authorities which have historic documentation of the region.

Best regards, Christina

I wonder if "village" is the right word. The name I have is Kirchberg am Wagram. Do you know it or have any advice?

Kirchberg am Wagram is not actually close to Salzburg - it is much closer to Vienna and located near the Danube.
So you could try to contact the tourist board of the region of Wagram:

Verein Tourismus & Regionalentwicklung Region Wagram
Tel: +43 664 1011436
Email: office@regionwagram.at

Of course you could also contact directly the local authorities, but maybe it would be easier to get in touch with the tourist board first, also considering language barriers.

If you will visit this area, for your honeymoon you could stay a few days in Vienna and a few days in the Wachau valley along the Danube, which is really close to Kirchberg am Wagram: http://www.donau.com/de/wachau/

Best regards, Christina

Shows how much I know! Thanks Christina. A question: my husband does want to see Salzburg (Sound of Music!) so do you think it would be too far to weave into this trip? Obviously we'll be going to  Kirchberg am Wagram, too. Thanks so much for the info on the tourist board there. I'll be writing them this weekend!

Hello!

Maybe you can make Vienna the base for your trip, as I assume you will arrive by plane?

You can easily travel from Vienna to Kirchberg am Wagram - it is 43 minutes by train.

After you stay in Kirchberg am Wagram you could just return to Vienna and travel to Salzburg from there. Train connections between Vienna and Salzburg are very frequent and the trip takes just 2 hours and 20 minutes. So if you want to visit Salzburg, there is no problem to include it in the trip.

Best regards, Christina

You are welcome!

Good luck with tracing back your family history and have a nice honeymoon as well!

By the way, if you have some spare time left I recommend a trip to the lovely Salzkammergut Lake District, which is close to Salzburg:

If you take a Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg (http://www.salzburg.info/en/sights/guided_tours/tours_from_salzburg/sound_of_music) you will visit a part of it, but it actually deserves more than just a few hours.

Best regards, Christina
