Where to base myself in Bali

by /bio/jentay »

I've heard that Kuta is really too touristy. Should I go inland? Stay in two different areas? I have a week to explore the island. All suggestions welcome! Thanks

It was several years ago, but we stayed in a wonderful guesthouse in Ubud and explored the island from there for a week. We found it more relaxing than moving around. Hope this helps.

When we visited I fell in love with Sanur (hope I'm spelling that right). I loved the beaches of Bali and found the interior of the island to be just a bit too humid for me (though I did enjoy exploring it). You're going to love Bali. A true paradise!

It's a small island so you can explore it from anywhere.  Ubud is a more central location and higher so can be cooler.  It's also a great place to settle in for a week.  I like the Penestanen area just outside and still walking distance to town.  There are some very good restaurants, great shopping and it doesn't cost a fortune to hire a taxi to take you just about anywhere.  You might look for a villa to rent for the week.  They generally come with a cook, a lovely way to spend a week, and they're available for just about any budget.

In Bali, Amed is good for the north east. Padangbai good for central east (Candidasa also, but it is getting a bit close to Amed - actually you could stay in Candi and do Amed and Padangbai plus surrounding rice terrace areas) and of course Ubud.

Although Bali is relatively small, the traffic and roads are bad enough to make just one spot as a base for scooter daytrips not practical.

Avoid the coastal areas of Bali like the plague; merchants and staff there have become cold and un-Balinese.  Base yourself in the town of Ubud in the central highlands, where the traditional warmth of Bali--and its rituals--are found.  Ubud is surrounder by numerous crafts villages which are fascinating to explore, and a cheap taxi ride there is all that is needed for your transportation.  Once again, Ubud is the place--and perhaps one half-day excursion to the coast will round out your stay and confirm how wise it was to stay in Ubud.  You will see religious processions, evening dance performances in the open air squares; and the Monkey Forest nearby.  Have a good trip.  Best, Arthur Frommer

IMO, Kuta is not Bali ... never visited on my first visit 40 years ago ... it is ultra touristy now. The "beach" resort areas are all tourist driven.  Ubad gets it share of tourists but there are villages nearby that are more "authentic".  We hired a private driver / guide (more a driver that could speak English reasonably we) by the day (it was worth it). Do bargain.on the fee.

I prefer the beach. No not Kuta but Sanur. When I went last few years ago, it was very peaceful. Stayed at a beach front bungalow (I believe it was Gazebo Cottage or something similar. It was cheap and right on the beach. No rowdy crowds and a calm ocean. Ubud is very nice but you can make day trips and go through the small villages on the way.
