Spending 5 days in Amsterdam, should we do The Hague on one?

by mushroom »

The question might answer itself if you make a list of what you would be most interested to do and see in Den Haag.  When I visited for a day, I had very specific reasons for wanting to go (to see the Panorama Mesdeg and the Mondrian collection in the modern art museum).  While I was there, I stopped by to see other sights of artistic and historic interest.  Many people go just to see The Girl With The Pearl Earring in the lovely & small Mauritshais Museum, but the painting often is on loan, so if that is high your list, make sure it there.  Other people I know have gone to visit the International Court of Justice, but I have never been clear about tours or when it is open.  I would imagine you can only go as part of a guided tour.

If your main interest in travel is simply strolling in historic centers. the one in Den Haag is fairly small, and most people would probably go to Haarlem or Delft instead.

Thank you Mushroom! I was hoping for a mix of museums and historic architecture (something I studied in college and still have a passion for). Would Haarlm or Delft have BOTH of those elements or just the architecture? And thanks for the tip on the Mauritshais Museum. That was the main reason I picked The Hague.

Hello, First time to Netherlands. Thinking of adding The Hague onto Amsterdam trip, but don't want to cram too much enjoy (have 5 days total, not including the day we fly out so it's 6 with that, though I am counting the day we arrive since arrival is in the morning). Enjoy history and historic architecture. Worth it or just stay in Amsterdam? Doubt we'll ever get back (I tend to go to new countries each time we travel).

There is a museum of Delftware in Delft, that I know, but I have never been to the town.  I have heard it is quite picturesque and many people rent bikes to enjoy the town.  I have never been to Haarlem either, but it is the main destination for people in Amsterdam looking to take a day trip to a very well preserved city of yesteryear. As to any museums there, I don't know.  I tend to think Den Haag packs more punch as an arts destination, and if you go, consider visiting the Panorama Mesdag, which only takes a few minutes to see.

During your time in Amsterdam you might enjoy visiting the Pathe Tuschinski movie theatre in the center of Amsterdam,  to see the interior architecture.  You can go into the lobby anytime, and it is one of the best preserved movie palaces in the world,  a triumph of populist Art Deco.

We were in Delft a few years ago (parallel parking along a canal with no barrier was interesting). Anyway, it is a very picturesque city and there are numerous interesting museums and historic sights to visit.  We were there 1-1/2 days and certainly didn't run out of things to see/do.

I think it was in Delft where I managed to get onto the trolley tracks near a train station with our rental Opel.My spouse got quite agitated even though no one was killed or even seriously injured.  Thought it might have been another town on that trip.
