Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker

by MelissaM »

I'm going with my kids and while I usually prefer the quieter, less developed places I'm worried there won't be enough for them to do in Caye Caulker. Or should we do Placencia instead? Also, do you think it's necessary to spend any time in the rainforest, or should we just take day trips to see the Mayan ruins. My kids are 8 and 12. Thanks.

I did a 9 day trip a few years ago that combined time spent in the rainforest near San Ignacio at a lodge called Pook's Hill and then spent the rest on the coast in Hopkins and stayed at Hamanasi Lodge.  It was a great balance of rainforest, Maya sites, and then the coast.  Hopkins was really calm with great snorkeling.

I have been to Ambergris Caye on another trip, and I thought it was too busy.  I didn't travel to Belize with my kids on these occassions, but the whole time when I was at Pook's Hill and at Hamanasi, I thought about how much they would love it and that I would come back with them.

Having traveled with my kids to both Ambergris and Caye Caulker, I would say Caye Caulker most definitely. There's more than enough there for the little ones and the atmosphere is much less frenetic. I'd also recommend spending some overnights inland, because it's the caving and Mayan ruins and rainforest that really make Belize special (to my mind).

Have a wonderful trip however you do it!

I've been to both (with my kids in tow) and we all preferred Caye Caulker. Much more laid back, lots to do and so relaxing. But I'd also agree with Arsenal Job: don't spend all your time at the beach! What makes Belize so special are its Mayan ruins, rainforest and caving experiences. So go inland for part of your vacation.

Have a wonderful time!

Trying this again: I'd recommend Caye Caulker over Ambergris. Your kids should have more than enough to do there (and its far less honky tonk). But do spend some real time inland. What makes Belize special (to my mind) are its Mayan temples, rainforests and cave exploring opportunities. You can just do a beachy vacation in many places. In Belize, you'll find yourself exploring ancient caves that were used for Mayan buriel rituals, and going on intense nature hikes through the rainforest. It is a truly wonderful destination for familes!

CC is a small caye less than a mile from the reef, from where you can take day trips to the mainland.  Placencia is a peninsula 19 miles from the reef, but much closer to the mainland and days trips offered.  Both are laid back and quaint, but Placencia has more to offer for both land and sea

We went a few years back and ended up in Placencia for our ocean time. Really, really liked it. You might consider it instead of one of the Cayes. Though I shouldn't comment as we didn't get to either Caye Caulker or Ambergris. I'd love to go back. Belize was one of my best trips ever. I felt like I just scratched the surface there.

Hi Melissa,

Pauline had an excellent answer and I agree. Caye Caulker would also be my choice. Our clients love it and I think your family would have a lot fun. I also agree with Pauline that the Mayan ruins should not be missed. Typically we do half the time inland and half on the cayes in an 8 day / 7 night trip. River Tubing through cave systems are also very popular, if you do spend time inland I suggest looking into this with Mayan Ruins. Have a wonderful vacation!

Best Wishes,

I prefer caye caulker over ambergris. I don't think that caye has childeren in mind. placencia is a nice place also. to go .with children palcencia might be better . especially if the kids are active. may have more activities and a big beach for them
