Brazil Olympics

by happynomad »

I've always wanted to attend an Olympics and was thinking maybe I'd try to go for the one in Brazil. How far in advance does one have to start planning? I'd assume the hotels sell out years in advance right? Also, how are the tickets usually distributed?

Ah, something I know about! You get the tickets from Cartan (watch their website about a year before the event) and then you DON'T get hotels until a month before the event. That's because the countries involved always block off more rooms than they can use, hotel prices soar and they never fill the rooms! So by waiting (though it's nerve wracking), you pay much less. I did this in London and in Beijing. Going to the Olympics is AMAZING. A wonderful treat.

Absolutly agree about wanting to visit the Olympics, I missed out on London last year (darn ballots).

You may want to wait until after the World Cup next year though.

I only say this because if the protests continue as they are expected to, there may be public safety restrictions in place, putting your enjoyment of this spectacle at risk.

Who knows, the civil unrest may all be resolved by then, but this is just a reminder of what is happening in Brazil at he moment.

Anyway, if you do make the journey I hope it is as much fun as you hope for.

Waiting until the last minute is too risky on the Brazil Olympics (I think). I've heard that a lot of places are already booked up, so much so that they're placing tourists in the favelas. You should try and get a hotel as soon as possible if you're serious about going.

I have a rental agency and I can advise you that waiting until the last month is something you need to avoid, if you want to find somewhere to rent. Right now the preparations are on their way and many clients are looking for places to stay. I recommend staying in neighborhood that will be part in the Olympic Games, such as Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana. Have a great trip!

You can find great accommodation in Rio de Janeiro. For the Summer Games in 2016 you can find all kinds of offers that can help you have a great stay in a great area, near some of the venues of the Games. But make sure you prepare ahead of time. I would say at least a year before the official start of the Games.
