Hotel Recommendations for Riviera Maya

by paweber »

If you don't have to be precisely on the beach and don't mind walking 5 to 10 minutes to get to a beautiful beach then I can suggest the hotel we stay in at PDC which is Hotel Riviera Caribe Maya. They have arrangements with a very nice Beach Club where you can laze away the day. The hotel is popular with both Mexican and foreign tourists that recognize a good deal. Rooms are basic, but clean and functional. The hotel is a couple of blocks off Avenida Quinta (5th Avenue) which is the shopping/dining pedestrian street that runs through the center of Playa del Carmen. I like the hotel's location as it is in a quieter area of the city but still convenient to the beach and 5th Avenue.

You can easily reach Playa del Carmen by frequent first  class deluxe bus service right from the Cancun Airport. The bus will arrive at the PDC bus terminal; there is a taxi rank right outside where you can catch a cab to your hotel.

Thanks for the recommendation; however, having a beachfront hotel is priority.

Try the Playa Maya in that case. Have heard real good things about that property and it is on a beach. Might fit your need if the price is acceptable.

I am planning a trip to Mexico and would like a place on the beach with restaurants & shops to walk to.  I have been looking at Playa del Carmen, Tulum, etc.  We are not looking for alot of night life, although some entertainment would be nice.  I have looked at Trip Advisor, etc. and get more confused every time I go there.  Please help.

Lots of nice places in Tulum (sorry PDC is too big for me these days). I usually stay in Akumal so if interested I may be able to help. Friends stayed at Cabanas Tulum, very nice on a nice stretch of beach with beautiful beach beds and free breakfast, anything off the menu. Some of the hotels have entertainment, La Zebra has salsa night every Friday and Zamas has entertainment in the evening, usually on weekends but might have some during the week if it is high season, Mezzanine has something, just cannot remember what. The one drawback with Tulum is it is a couple KMs from the pueblo where most all the shops are, pueblo also has cheaper meals as well. So you would have to have a rental car or take taxis to get to town. PAWeber'ssuggestion of Playa Maya is a good one, never been there but do not remember reading a single bad review of the place.

Where do you stay in Akumal?  Can you walk to shops and restaurants?

Hi,

Well I have stayed at many places, my favorite hotel is Hotel Akumal Caribe right on Akumal, beautiful location, beachfront and has a pool, the rooms were recently remodeled (some of them anyway), very clean and nice staff, good security.

Last year I stayed at Vista del Mar on Half Moon Bay in North Akumal, very nice, $75 per night. This year (leave May 1 - yippee!) I am staying at Playa Caribe casitas on HMB, rooms are $75 including tax. They have regular 2br condos as well and a reverse osmosis water system so you can drink the tap water. The casitas are not beachfront but I can just walk around the side of the building to see the beach and the pool.

Yes you can walk to the restaurants and shops in Akumal, from the entrance to Yal-Ku Lagoon is 2km, too much for me and I have mobility issues, but will be traveling with a friend who has a car. You can also rent bikes and golf carts. The golf carts go for $40 per day plus a $50 deposit or you can rent for 4 hours for $20.

If you want to check out various lodgings take a look at the Accommodations tab on Locogringo.com. Have used them many times and they are very friendly and helpful, best of all they live in the area near Yal-Ku so if for any reason you have a problem, you can call them rather than trying to deal with some call center in India or who knows where. Hope this is helpful.

This discussion may be old, but I would like to share my experiences here during my vacation to Mexico. Riviera Maya is of Caribbean coastline in Mexico. I was staying near the town and Oscar Cancun Shuttle service helped me in my journey from one to another place. I hope you should contact any agency for more information.
