Is Cancun safe?

by Traveling James »

We've also been considering Cancun for our honeymoon just because it seems cheaper than some Caribbean destinations (we've been looking at packages). But will it be too much of a spring break atmosphere? And will it be safe? We've been hearing a lot about the drug war in Mexico and it worries my in-laws to be. Thanks!!

I was in Cancun last month and it felt totally safe. In fact, I saw police everywhere. I wouldn't worry about it.

James, i travel constantly to Mexico. Some places are very dangerous right now, but Cancun is one of the main tourism destinations, so you couldn.'t chose a safest place in Mexico for vacation.

I was there a couple weeks ago, it's a paradise!

So glad to see these positive statements. I, too, would agree that Cancun is very safe (in fact, it has a much lower violent crime rate than Chicago does currently). Cordially, Pauline Frommer

I would worry more about my safety in Orlando and DisneyWorld. Seriously. Cancun is far safer than Dallas or Boston, here is something to chew on regarding safety in Cancun and Mexico http://www.artdecosuites.com/2012/05/is-it-safe-for-americans-in-cancun/. I can't recommend vacationing in northern Mexico where all the cartel violence is happening, but Cancun is safe.

There are no highway robbers in the Yucatan Peninsula (not counting the ones with badges looking for a bribe). Renting a car gives you more flexibility and allows you to see all of the inbetween sights you would miss on a tour. There is a good article on public safety in Cancun here http://www.artdecosuites.com/2012/05/is-it-safe-for-americans-in-cancun/

How about the surrounding areas in the Yucatan?  I am thinking of taking my family to sites outside of Cancun proper to visit the archaelogical sites like Chizen Itza by driving a rental car.  Do you feel it is safe getting around in a rental car or are tours a better way?  Thanks in advance.

Renting a car is fine, my late husband and I drove from Cancun to Chichen Itza, there is a toll road that is very fast, just make sure you have a full tank, as I only recall one Pemex at a tourist plaza where we stopped for drinks and to use the restroom. I usually like to take the free road, but the start is quite a bit south of Cancun. Takes longer but you go through some interesting Mayan villages. We used Easyway most of the time for our rentals, very reasonable and include all insurance if you ask.

The Yucatan is quite safe IMHO. We are heading back in a few days, and renting a car from Easyway again, to see more Mayan ruins, charming Colonial towns, cool cenotes, haciendas, Spanish missions, and white powder beaches with turquoise water. Amazing. There are many comfortable, reasonably priced small posadas throughout the region, so you can choose a flexible route that suits you. Look at making a large circle from Cancun airport straight through to Valladolid, and perhaps a larger one through Merida, and back over to Tulum on the coast, using those towns as bases for visiting ruins and visiting cenotes along the way.

Well, we have been here since last Friday and so far everything is going as has been described from members of the forum in response to this thread.  Hotel Zone has an abundance of Municipal Police who are always patrolling, the toll road to Chichen Itza and the local road back from Chichen Itza to Cancun area is an interesting mix of villages and the way of life in a non commerical area - it's been stated before but I state it again but beware of the etopes (road bumps) that are in around the towns/villages on the local road.  Some are marked with signs and others are but so close to the actual bumps if u don't slow down a lot fast u hit them real hard:(  My transmission on skipped when I hit one going about 40kmh, yikes and I thought I was going to be stuk somewhere between Valladolid and Cancun...

The only down side of our trip so far has come from the local police when I came off Highway 307 to enter the Hotel Zone/Airport area where police who are in white/yellow cars not hte black/blue ones that patrol the Hotel Zone stopped me for "speeding."  I was actaully going slower than the locals who zipped by without care but since our family is Asian and going slow they can make out our features as tourists and not local was pulled over.  They threatened us with a ticket and a trip to local police for 1000 pesos or $100US dollars.  When we "begged" for mercy they said they will give us a warning for 500 pesos or $50US.  I showed him my wallet which was indeed empty since we had exhaused all of our funds and I had not had a chance to reload at an ATM except for my lucky $2dollar bill & the fact we leveraged our lack of English speaking my native tongue mixed with English they looked frustrated and let us go...

Be careful driving and obey the speed limit...
