re passport expiration

by Vivacious48 »

My passport expires in June 2015.  I have booked a trip to Cancun to return on 2/25/15.  Does Mexico require that your passport must expire six months out from the date of your departure?

As far as I am aware no they do not, but the problem is with the airlines. Some countries have this requirement (Costa Rica for example) and some do not, so some of the airline personnel just go with a blanket six month rule for everyone flying overseas. I have read Spirit in particular does this. So your problem lies more with boarding the airliner than Mexican Immigration. I would renew.

Requirements constantly change. For example according to Timatic, which is the database most airlines use to reference the latest passport and visa requirements, indicates holders of US passports must only have their passport valid upon arrival in Mexico (no 6 months remaining rule). Same for Costa Rica - again, that's as of today and of course this could change. South Africa on the other hand has a 30 day remaining validity rule and Oman has the 6 months remaining validity rule.

Check Timatic yourself. There are various free portals into it if you do an online search for "timatic visa info". I use the Star Alliance version.
