Safety?

by johnturner »

We're thinking of a trip to Colombia next year, 2014.  We love South America and have taken 4 or 5 trips there in the past.  We've exhausted most of the "top" tourist spots/countries.  We would like to go to Bogota and Cartagena, Colombia but are concerned about safety issues.  The U.S. State Dept. lists warnings for travel to Colombia.  How safe it is for tourists in Bogota and Cartagena?

If I could find a reasonable airfare I wouldn't hesitate to visit either city.

We went to Colombia a couple of years ago with our youngest son. It was fantastic, beautiful, wonderful people, great cities. I would go again tomorrow. We felt completely safe everywhere.

No worries about safety there anymore (beyond the usual pickpocketing that you'd encounter anywhere). You should go!

Is it safe for a single woman to take a taxi, any taxi, in the evening from the Airport in Medellin to El Prado?  I won't be staying at a hotel but at a residence.  Muchas Gracias - y tambien, also - is it safe to walk around the El Prado neighborhood as a single woman during the day - I will be an artist in residence at a non-profit artist's space for 3 weeks and need to do research (i.e. taking photos etc.)  Muchas Gracias.

So no more kidnappings?  I sound paranoid, I know, and I've travelled a ton, but for some reason growing up during that Miami Vice era has me thinking crazy thoughts.  I'm a single woman travelling alone with enough Spanish to get by...

Hey, I travelled around alone in Colombia and I did not have any problems.

Have always your ID with you in case that the police stops and checks you (don´t take drugs with you) and be aware of pickpockets like you do everywhere else in Latin America as well but don´t be too afraid.

And if you are insecure you can always ask the locals (people that work in hostels/hotels) which areas are save, which aren´t etc.

In Medellín there are save taxis outside the airport. You shouldn´t have any problems. They also have a taximeter in Medellín and Bogotá. If you go to Cartagena you should always ask for the price before you leave! Ask in your accommodation for the right price. For example in the city center you always pay 5.000 PEsos to go anywhere. In the night it´s 6.000. If you go further, could be 7.000 or 8.000.

Enjoy Colombia!!

I have been living in Cali, Colombia for the last four years and I have never had a problem related to safety. I do not live in a gated or guarded community. I live in a strata 3 neighborhood. I feel very safe in my neighborhood, and I plan on living here for a long time. There are palces in any city and in any country that are dangerous. One always needs to be vigilant no matter where he lives. I find Colombia to be as safe as a lot of places in the USA. One thing that Colombia does not have is random violence in schools and public places. To learn more about Colombia, just visit www.colombilivinggood.com

Cartagena is one of the safest cities of Colombia, is a turist destination, like any other city in Latin America got unsafe areas, but they are not in the city center, you should go!
