Most of Rocky Mountain National Park Reopens

by redbikegirl »

Things are slowly getting back to normal for Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park! 93% of the park is open.  Here's more info on the trails, campgrounds and visitor's centers:

That's all very well, but - to get to the park you have to get to Estes Park, and the big problem is this:

You can't get to Estes Park via 34 from Loveland

You can't get to Estes Park via 36 from Lyons (you can't even get to Lyons on the 66),

You can't get up the Boulder Canyon (119) to Nederland to pick up the 7 to Estes Park

 - you have to take a detour and back route where conditions can vary greatly.

This from the Denver Post: The alternate route that strings Colorado highways 119 and 7 up from Interstate 70 at Idaho Springs could take up to three hours, depending on conditions

True...but the drive from Denver usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours anyway and it's worth the detour to see the beautiful Rockies this time of year, especially if you already have reservations and have your heart set on spending time in RMNP!

Totally agree, worth it anytime, you and I know that, just making sure nobody drives around in vain looking for a way to get there now that it's tricky.

As of today Oct. 1 the park is closed due to the budget impasse in Washington DC. That also means that the road to Grand Lake, Trailridge Road, is closed.

Highway 7 is the only way into town. The hospitality establishments in E.P. are hoping that folks will come visit nevertheless, and there are quite a few options outside the RMNP but very near E.P. for the seasonal enjoyment (Elk rut, fall colors, yellow Aspens etc.). Fingers crossed that they can rescue some of the season.

Oy! My heart goes out to all those business owners. What a senseless thing this shutdown is.

The Colorado state government has chipped in and the park, even though it's a federal park, is open again for another couple of weeks or so.
