How does one get to the Cook Islands from the US?

by Emily Freeman »

I remember reading about them as a kid, but have no idea how long it would take to get ther from the East Coast of the US. I'm assuming it wouldn't be a direct flight, so I'm wondering if a visit to the Cook Islands could be merged with a visit to somewhere else interesting. How does one plan this type of trip?

It will be a long trip from the East Coast of the US. You can fly to Los Angeles and pick up the Air N.Z. flight that goes nonstop from L.A. to Rarotonga airport once a week (currently on Sundays). Or fly via Tahiti (Papeete) or via Australia or New Zealand (Auckland), that's even longer! So you can merge the flight, as you say, with a trip to Tahiti or New Zealand or Australia. Oddly enough I see no nonstops from Hawaii.
