Help with itinerary

by /bio/e90fleet »

Hello, i need  your suggestion please. We are planning to take a 7-8 days vacation for the first time in Costa Rica, but we don't know which area to pick. In general we want to see the wildlife, but prefer if we can stay in one location and take day trips if possible. I prefer not to rent a car. What can  you recommended in this case?    Thank you and much appreciated!

Hi e90fleet,

You will love visiting my country. I would suggest spending your time in 2 locations with the time you have available. If this is your first to our country I would do something like this.

Day 1 - Arrival

  • Transfer to Arenal Volcano - private transfers or shared shuttles
  • Check in Hotel - Volcano Lodge & Springs, Nayara, Tabacon, Kioro there are many lodges, some have thermal volcanic hot springs on the property and it is good to choose one that does to save money and get more out of your trip.

Day 2 - Arenal

  • Optional Tour Day - So many options to choose from. Canopy Tour Ziplines, Aerial Tram, Hanging Bridges, Horseback Riding, Hiking, White Water Rafting, Birding, Cooking Classes, Hot Air Balloon Rides, River Floats, Caving, ATV tours, Waterfalls, Chocolate Tours, Night Hikes, the list goes on and on.

Day 3 - Arenal

  • Optional Tour Day

Day 4 - Arenal - Manuel Antonio - or other beach area

  • Private or shared transfer to Manuel Antonio or other beach area such as Tamarindo, Samara, Montezuma, Coco Beach, there are many beaches to choose from. Depending on the airports you use will help decide which beach you should choose.
  • Check in Hotel - Depending on where you go there are many options in hotels. In Manuel Antonio some I like are Si Como No, Parador, Villas Nicolas, Plaza Yara, La Posada

Day 5 - Manuel Antonio

  • Optional Tour Day - Surfing, Boat Tours, Snorkeling, Sea Kayaking, Mangrove Tours, Hiking, Birding, Horseback Riding, Waterfalls, there are similarities in activities from one area to the next. Divide your time wisely, research the areas to find the best examples of the tours you want to take.

Day 6- Manuel Antonio

  • Optional Tour Day

Day 7- Manuel Antonio

  • Private or Shared Transfer to the Airport

This is a very typical trip that I might plan for a client on the first visit, It will give you mountains, volcanoes, rainforest, beaches, and has a nice balance. Although you could choose one area and do day trips, this will limit what you will see as some areas will be out of reach.

I hope this helps, have a wonderful trip! You can check my photo galleries here on Frommers to see client photos and get an idea of what you may see on your own adventures.

Best Wishes,

We had 7 days and visited the Arenal volcano area and Monteverde for the cloud forest.  It was perfect.
