Any tips on the Dalmatian Coast?

by sarahv »

I've heard its wonderful. How long would a road trip take? Any towns one must stop in? When's the best time to go? And would this be good for a girlfriend's getway? Looking for a place to head with a group of good friends from my childhood.

Just go. The Dalmatian coast is spectacular. Transportation down its full length is a little more difficult than many other places in Europe though as there is no railway down the coast. We took the Jadrolinja (sp?) ferry overnight from Rijeka to Split, and then a few days later from Split to Dubrovnik. My favorite places along the way were:

Rovinj - beautiful small city that spirals up a hilltop. You can take a catamaran from here to Venice during the high season.

Opatija - an aging seaside resort. Nothing to do here but relax and take in the beauty

Split - Diocletians Palace is my favorite Roman site in all of Europe

Dubrovnik - probably the pretties old town I've ever been in.

The food along the coast tends to be heavily Italian influenced, indeed if not out right Italian.

SarahV - what did you end up doing? i am curious to go as well and would loveto know how you liked it and where you went. I was looking at cruises along the Dalmatian coast via small ship with Adventure Life (who I normally travel with), but am not sure if a cruise or a land something is the best way to see it? Share Share when you can!

You should always take out decent travel insurance, even for a weekend break.
