Advice where to stay

by JTraveler »

Good morning:

I am going on a "get out of Dodge" trip to recharge.

I've traveled many places in the Carribean but not D. R.

Any recommndation on where to stay.

this is to relax  - not looking for golf course or tennis.

I want a clean place on a nice beach.  Prefer not to go to the highest $ level but nice.

someone mentioned "Blue something or other"

any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Dominican Republic is large.  What part are you interested in visiting?

Punta Cana is known for its beautiful beaches.  There isn't much to do, and many people never leave their resorts.  If you are interested in sitting on the beach all day, this is a great spot.

Santo Domingo is a big city.  (Somewhere around 3,000,000 people.)  Lots to see with a lot of history.  Not good for beaches.

I prefer the North Coast.  Fly into Puerta Plata.  I stay in Cabarete at the Viva Wyndham Tangerine.  (20 minues from the airport.)  It's 3.5 stars, all inclusive.   Beautiful beach, 10 minute walk into town, safe public buses.  Cabarete is the wind surfing capital of the world.  If you would prefer non AI, try Villa Tiana.  I hear it is quite nice.

I agree with the other response and not go to Punta Cana. It is nothing but a tourist trap.

I read an article and thought it gave some great alternative. They say the top 5 beach areas to visit are:

Juan Dolio (#5)

Cabarete (#4)

Las Terrenas (#3)

Samana (#2)

Bahia de las Aguilas (#1)

There #1 sounds really good but a little complicated to get to and costly. Next time I go back I am going to go to Las Terrenas. Here is there article if you want to read more. http://www.santodomingotaxi.com/5-best-beaches-dominican-republic/

I hope that helps and let us know what you pick and what you think of where you picked.
