Restaurants for local specialities

I'll be travelling round the DR and I want to try sancocho, the local chicken stew dish. Where are the best places to try it in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata? Looking to get out of the resorts.

In Response to Restaurants for local specialities:[QUOTE] This will be almost impossible to do in Punta Cana, where all-inclusive hotels dominate the scene and there are very small native communities--in fact, hardly any.  Puerto Plata, on the other hand, has the large city of Puerto Plata with numerous restaurants catering to a local clientele and therefore likely to have the dish you seek.  Bear in mind that since almost all the tourist traffic to the D.R. stays in all-inclusive hotels, whose premises (and restaurants) are rarely left, it is difficult to sample the local culture.  But you can do that more easily from a hotel in the Puerto Plata area than in Punta Cana.

There are a few Bars down by the Beach that have a Menu.

I'd ask one of the Hotel Staff for a recomendation.

Maybe give him a few Beers and 10 Dollars and he'll show you around his Town.

You do want to get a taste of life outside the Hotel !

I've had food poisoning a few times in DR so I'd be careful of just "Pot Luck"

There are many who venture outside the All Inclusive Hotels - its not expensive to see other Beaches and the Bus rides are great fun !

I know its not recomended but those Taxi Motorbikes are fun and cheap !

Motoconchos scare me, but the guagua (public bus) is great.
