Cultural sights?

by pirouette »

It seems that when people discuss Dubai they talk about the amazing modern architecture and indoor skiing venues, but I never hear much about Arab cultural sights. I'm planning a multi-stop trip and could add-on Dubai, but am not sure it's worth it (not really into shopping malls and the like).

Old Dubai straddles the Deira and Bur Dubai districts along Dubai Creek.  You can take inexpensive abras, small dhow-like boats, and zig-zag across the Creek.  Even if you’re not a shopper, just visiting the souks (gold and spice on Deira side; silk on Bur Dubai side) is a colorful experience especially in the evening when more people are out and about.  The Dubai Museum (Al Fahidi Fort) and Bastikia Quarter are located on the Bur Dubai side.  The evocative Bastikiya buildings have been restored and converted to a small art gallery, restaurant, and B&B.  It’s pleasant walking around the narrow, shaded lanes getting glimpses of courtyards, wind towers and minarets.  The historic Saeed Al Maktoum House, a museum on Dubai Creek, also contains artifacts and photography.  There are pleasant waterfront restaurants on the Deira side just outside the silk bazaar.  Certainly enough for a 2-day visit.

The city of Dubai is a highly cosmopolitan society with a diverse and vibrant culture. The influence of Islamic and Arab culture on its architecture, music, attire, cuisine and lifestyle are very prominent as well.

This is actually a very good question, and I love tha fact that you are similar to me of being interested in the cultural aspects of destinations I do visit. Let me give you a brief list of the best heritagous and cultrual sites to visit in Dubai:

  • Dubai museum: you need to visit the local museum where you could explore about the daily lifestyle at Dubai city before modernity. it also includes very ancient tombs and objects. it`s ticket is like 3 AED less than 1 USD and could be purchased on spot
  • Bistakiya: Like an old district at Dubai and near to the museum, it shows how the old parts of city used to look like. I loved it so much and I believe you are gonna do.
  • Souks: Visit the old gold souk where you will see the huge dommed way inside where on its two sides the shops are rowed. You will not need to buy but just to see the old architecture style there. All these locations are offered within a very awesome Dubai bus tour which takes you to all these parts of city for reasonable rate.
  • Jumierah mosque: it is not very old mosque, but it shows how the traditional mosques in Dubai used to be built. The featured about mosque is that it allows not-Muslims to go inside for 7$ ticket.
  • Sikh Temple of GuruNanak: A temple for the Sikh Indians in Dubai, anybody is welcomed to go inside and discover about there creed.

May be these all I store for now, and could be back to the list when I recall new attractions to add!
