Paris Markets List

by NHtraveller »

In Response to Re: Paris Markets List: thank you. I bookmarked your Paris sample. We plan on a lot of walking so we will give it a try. I will watch for future posts and will probably be asking more questions.

I did repost my "Paris Sample" walk, and will be working on some more...but if you have specific questions for your June trip, post them, and we can try...most of the regular Paris posters have made it back on line. Also, if you can identify particular threads you bookmarked, I'll see what I can find from what we saved.

Among the things missing since Google wiped the boards on the way out is the list of Paris food markets (and a few others) by arrondissement. These are the regular indoor and outdoor markets operating all over the city, but not the "food streets" such as rue Cler, rue du Poteau, etc. which are home to many permanent food stores, including wholesale.

This list is based on one issued by the city government:

My favorite is the Raspail market, but I've never made it to the Monge market.

Pheymont, thank you for all your insight on Paris. I had read many of your previous posts and bookmarked them but they got wiped. I had many by Roadcrazy for Provence too. He kindly just gave me more info for that area.

I will be in Paris for 4 days at the end of June. I am watching for your tips. Thanks for the links on the markets.

There is an excellent book, "Paris in a Basket" which, if you can beg, borrow or steal, will be really helpful.  At Place de la Nation on Saturday mornings there is a huge street market, largely undiscovered by the average tourist.  You won't regret the metro ride there.  And  close by is a branch of the Printemps department store, plus shops carrying every object known to man as well as numerous cafes & restaurants.

That's a book I've missed up to now...I just looked on Amazon and elsewhere and it looks great. Many pictures, and a foreword by Paul Bocuse. Amazon has it new for just under $25, but there are links on Amazon to many good used copies (from around 75c!! to $10+) I just ordered one described as "like new" for 77c + $3.99 shipping.

Thanks, Arion...and welcome back!

Thank you, Pheymont!  It was a struggle but I made it.  Having done so I now find I have nothing to say!

I would tend to say that there is no reason to cross Paris to see a special market, unless you need to go to the organic market, a flea market or the book market (among others).  If your goal is just a normal street market, the one closest to where you are staying -- with few exceptions -- should be excellent.

The Paris municipal website has a list of all of the markets in the city, as well as the days and hours of operation:   http://marches.equipements.paris.fr/

You will immediately notice that almost all of them are in the outer arrondissements, and frankly the farther you go out, the lower the prices are.
