Oh please fix this quickly - subscribe button

by PHeymont »

I'm in the same situation, but I think, on reflection, that I'd like to leave it the way it is, and just uncheck it--because I think too many people will NOT check it if it's blank...and I got the impression that there isn't a way to make it be only for the first post...

I just don't want to run into what I did today.  I was away from my computer for maybe 6 hours, and came home to find 30 e-mails in my inbox.  And I got a notification for this one - although I unchecked the box!  Maybe we could have a "no subscription" option on our profiles?

I have to agree with RC.  I even tried unchecking one thread today only to get a message that I wasn't allowed to unsubscribe or the equivalent.  What ???  Please do make it voluntary.  Those who want to check the box will find it.

I heartily endorse having a subscribe button, and I think OPs should automatically be subscribed unless they opt out.  However, I DON'T think the subscribe box should be checked off automatically for response posts, meaning that responders have to manually uncheck with each post to avoid subscription.  For someone like me, who tends to respond to many, many threads, this means getting a boatload of notification e-mails, such as I found when I came home today after six hours away from my computer.  Please have the box UNCHECKED for responses, so that responders have to opt in to receive notifications.  Holy cow, I don't want to be inundated with notifications for every thread I post on!

After testing today (I unsubscribed from this forum and this thread to make sure it really unsubscribes) I offer my solution.

I've been advocating for a LONG time for auto-subscription, especially for the OP, so we know they actually see the replies we work on. If they have to check it off to make that happen, we're back where we were on the old forums. So...I'm prepared to uncheck (we have more incentive to uncheck than they do to check), and I limit the number of e-mails by this method, which yields me only the notices I want:

FIRST: I don’t subscribe to anything I check regularly (daily or more) anyway…which is to say, Europe Multi, France, Italy, Spain, US Multi, New York, New Jersey, Tips/Tools General, Air Travel, Currency, Cameras.

SECOND: I do subscribe to New Jersey, Maine, Scandinavia, Portugal, Pennsylvania and Washington DC, where I keep an eye on things and might miss new posts because there’s less posting.

THIRD: Anywhere else, I only subscribe to individual threads that catch my attention.

Another poster also made the suggestion of having the forum e-mails go to a separate e-mail account so you only see them when you go there to check them....

I agree that having OPs auto-subscribed (at least unless they uncheck the box) would be best.  But it's a real deterrent to many others, including people who may be drive-by responders who are inundated with later e-mail notifications and decide not to post on Frommers any more because they get too much "spam" and they don't realize there's a way to unsubscribe.  If I didn't have a choice to unsubscribe, I'd chuck my ten years here and go rather than face an inbox like what I had yesterday.

And I'm not interested in subscribing to any threads.

If you dont want Emails from Frommers then Mark them as "Junk" and they'll go there instead.

Garry, I don't seem to be able to mark e-mails as junk with my provider.  When I mark things as spam, they go into my spam folder (along with some stuff that it decides on its own is spam), but I still get e-mails from the same place coming in as regular e-mail rather than going to my spam folder.

Plus, sometimes I want to get Frommer's e-mail - like a thread I do want to subscribe to, or (I hope soon will be) notifications of friend requests and messages.

OK, for nearly two weeks now I've struggled with this, and I still have trouble remembering to unsubscribe with every single post and I am ending up with what's beginning to feel like spam in my inbox.  This is incredibly off-putting.

If we can't have an opt-in for subscription rather than an opt-out, could we at least have it so that we only have to unsubscribe once per thread, rather than with every single post?

This is truly driving me nuts.
