Help choosing our next trip - including opera or theater

by whatsallthis »

Hi, the hubs and I have to negotiate our destinations. He loves opera and theater, and I tend to prefer scenery, nature walks, and walled medieval towns. (Not that either of us doesn't enjoy the other's preferences too...) In the past we have combined London's west end with the Cotswolds and Bath, and Prague's opera house with Melk Abbey and the Salzgammergut.

Now we're considering returning to Europe either this September or early/mid December. So....where to go next? London (again) with a train trip to Scotland? Venice and Lake Como? Berlin and the Rhine? I have searched for European opera houses and theaters. We've missed Verona with their summer schedule. I think the Bastille in France is a bit steep for us. Does anyone have any theater venues they love? Thanks in advance!

The axis of Milan-Parma-Bologna has a robust winter schedule for opera, includes the home town of Verdi, Busseto. If you day trip from Milan on a sunny day in winter you can have spectacular scenery. Parma and bologna don't have great natural scenery nearby but they have small towns of great charm with beautiful castles and art, much of it reachable without a car.

something else to consider would be combining Naples with Palermo. Lots of great scenic day trips from both cities if the weather is dry and sunny, and the opera culture is historic.

Susan, thanks for the suggestion. I neglected to mention that we went to Vienna after Prague and the Salzgammergut. (We tried to fit a lot in that trip, not knowing if we’d be back- but it seems we’re addicted to traveling now!). I’ll have to research trips to the Alps from there.
