Thailand or Vietnam?

by JenTay »

I'm considering a trip to Asia and those two seem like the most interesting. I just don't know which to pick? Anybody have a favorite between the two?

My Daughter loves Backpacking and has recently done both.

She says they are both beautiful and worth a months stay.

Both countries have lots of Tourists and cater for Westerners tastes !

Anything specific and I'll ask her.

Why not go to both if time permits? I can tell you there are cheap flights between Hanoi and Bangkok; in fact we're taking Ethiopian Airlines between the two cities next month and IIRC the one way fare all-in was around $120.

I think the lack of public transportation may decide it for me. Thailand it is! Thanks, this has been very helpful

Thailand has been on the tourist trail much longer than Vietnam so practically speaking it makes sense that the infrastucture for travelers would be better developed there.  There's also the general nature of the people to add into the mix which makes Thailand in some ways the more tranquil of the 2, at least outside the bustle of Bangkok.  But having taken my first trip to Vietnam a few months ago I found that can work both ways.  Meaning, in Hanoi for instance, you'll find more edge to the experience.  At times it can be a rough edge to be sure but it's also the excitement of a place growing and developing before your eyes.  Something to consider.

I've been to both and much preferred Thailand. The people seemed more happy to see visitors, the sights were more varied and I preferred the food.

Hope this isn't too late, but I'd say Thailand, most definitely. The loveliest people in the world, great food, fascinating sights. Just more interesting than Vietnam, I thought. Would love to go back to Thailand and see more.
