Charleston vs. Savannah?

by gregory perry »

My question: I would like to take a long weekend trip to either Charleston,SC. or Savannah, GA. I've hear they were both nice towns with southern charm but I don't know which one to visit. I don't like to spread myself too thin to visit both in the same trip. My interests include U.S. history, art and architecture, indigenous food and culture of the region. Any recommendations?

Gregory, my knowledge of Savannah is from so long ago as to be almost totally irrelevant. But all of my memories are pleasant.

I have more recently been in Charleston and my memories there are pleasant as well.

I think your stated interests might be well served in either location.

Glad to be of assistance? Go and heve a good time in whichever city you choose.

Both are wonderful places and offer everything that you listed and more.  As for which one to choose, it is a personal choice.  For every person that prefers Charleston over Savannah, you will find another that prefers Savannah over Charleston.  Folks can even be divided on where to stay. For example, in Savannah we prefer to stay near Forsyth Park because it is quieter while friends prefer the more noisy and touristy section near the river.

My suggestion would be to research both places, including maps of each.  I recommend  the Frommer’s  site as a good place to start. The historic districts are both very conducive to walking but the layout in each is different.  Review and compare the sights, restaurants, etc.  which should help you decide whether one has more appeal to you than the other.  Also look into special events that may be scheduled when you are going that may or may not impact your selection.  Keep in mind that if there are, it will mean larger crowds and higher hotel rates.  Then make what will be a difficult decision. Whichever location you choose, you won’t go wrong.  But just be sure to plan a future trip in the other city and you can decide for yourself whether one is better than the other.  Have fun!!!

We preferred Savannah.  But Charleston was interesting, too.
