Quaint beach towns in Florida

by jdrake »

Hi all,

We're planning a trip to Florida in late October and we're looking for a location that meets these criteria:

beautiful beach
cute town with shops/restaurants/historic district
not too far from an airport (under two hours)
preferably not too crowded (we're not expecting solitude, we just don't want to feel like we're in Miami)
close enough to some good snorkeling that we can take a day trip to snorkel

What towns should we be looking at? We've done a little research into New Smyrna, Siesta Key, etc. are we on the right track? Are there other towns we should be looking at?

Thanks for your help!

This may sound cynical, but I think it's difficult to find all of the qualities you're seeking in one place in Floriday. The state has seen the biggest population growth since World War II, so it's difficult to escape the crowds (though with Zika there this year, that could be different). I would recommend Sanibel Island, but it's farther than two hours from a major airport. There are also some Panhandle towns that are lovely, but not as reliably warm and more created communities than historic ones (Seaside pops to mind). I'm hoping editor Jason Cochran, a FL native will also chime in.

You should look first at the West Coast, which is not as overbuilt as the East Coast. Try Anna Maria Island, Punta Gorda, or Bradenton Beach. The snorkeling is best in the Florida Keys, but those are not as quiet because the one road there goes right to Miami.

Hi there jdrake,

Our service allows you to connect with locals with this kind of expertise and share a mutual connection with you...Visit www.conjrapp.com and hopefully you'll be able to find the perfect beach! (Off the top of my mind we have connecitons in Stuart, Florida which is not far from Miami!)
