10 day driving itinerary in BAVARIA in May with 3 month old. Thank you!

by berlinmed »

I was hoping to get some feedback to finalize a 10 day travel itinerary for a Germany road trip. I am traveling with my wife and our 3 year old son. We travel a lot and our son is very active. The plan is to arrive to Frankfurt on a Saturday and fly back to USA from Munich on Tuesday 12 days later. We will rent a car. This is a tentative itinerary:     Saturday: Arrive to Frankfurt 7:25 am, get a car and drive to Heidelberg. Nap and walk around the city. Sun,14: Morning explore Heidelberg, then drive to Wurzburg in the afternoon. Rest of day Wurzburg. Sleep Wurzburg. Mon,15 Morning Wurzburg. Afternoon drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Sleep there. Tue,16 In the morning drive to Playmobil fun park in Zirndorf. Afternoon return to Rothenburg ob der tauber, or spend the evening in Nuremberg and return to sleep in Rothenberg for second night. Wed,17 Drive to and sleep in Augsburg(few hours in Legoland detour?) Thur,18 SCHWANGAU-HORN/fussen: Neuschwanstein  castle. Afternoon drive to Garmisch partenkirchen. Sleep there. Fri,19 garmisch partenkirchen: zugspitze and the gorge, stay there for second night or drive to Munich? Sat,20 Munich Sun,21 Munich Mon, 22 Munich Tue,23: Flight from Munich at 340 pm   Thank you in advance! Initially looks like a busy itinerary, but we tend to like busy itineraries on our trips, especially considering that many of these towns look small and we have the flexibility of a car, and reading the forum many people say one day is enough for most of these small towns, allowing us at least a few hours of sightseeing in them

I question the wisdom of arriving in Frankfurt with the severe lack of sleep that the transatlantic flight imposes on you, and driving that very morning. Not safe.

Take the train to Heidelberg and rent a car for next-day pickup. You board the train right at the airport, the trip takes about an hour. Timetables at www.bahn.de

In Heidelberg there is public transport from the station up into the town where a car is a hindrance anyway.

If you can't find a rental-car place open on a Sunday, take the train to Würzburg, it takes 2:26 hours, and get your car on Monday morning.

When you plan your Rothenburg stay, make a point of asking about overnight parking, you can't take it for granted.

I sleep well on airplanes, so arrival day driving isn't a problem for me.  But if you don't sleep, then it could be a safety issue.

We all have different interests, but I wouldn't spend 1 night in Rothenburg, let alone 2.  It is very pretty, and they did a good job of reconstruction after the WWII bomb damage, but there isn't much else there except looking pretty.  It is mass bus tour trade central, as well--so the vast majority of businesses are shops aimed at the bus tour herds.

For me, a couple of hours to walk around enjoying the pretty buildings and taking some photos was plenty.  Here's an extra tip: Avoid the infamous Rothenburg Scheeballen "confection"--we found it to be just a rather unpleasant wad of dough.  We tossed our's into the trash after a couple of bites.

We liked Dinkelsbuehl on the Romantic Road better--somewhat less touristy and still very scenic with nice walls.  Our favorite Bavarian old town is in Bamberg on the Regnetz River--very lovely and historic.  Big enough to have a good tourist infrastructure, but not overwhelmed by the bus tours like Rothenburg.  However, it is just north of Nuernberg, so I'm not certain that it would fit into your route. About a 1-hour drive from either Wurzburg or Nuernberg.

Maybe your 3-year old would enjoy staying in a castle hotel?  There's a nice one with a good restaurant in Colmberg, just a 15 to 20 minute drive east of Rothenburg--Burg Colmberg.   www.burg-colmberg.de

Thank you for your reply. I changed my itinerary based on multiple suggestions from several forums and this is what I came up with. Please give me some feedback. Otherwise my main concerns is: What to do on Friday , May 19, since we have a 3 year old, should we skip Garmisch altogether that day and add a day somewhere else in the itinerary, for example an extra day in Nuremberg?   Here is the updated itinerary. Thank you in advance, ill also post it as a separate thread to hopefully get more replies: Saturday: Arrive to Frankfurt 7:25 am, get a car and drive to Heidelberg. Nap and walk around Heidelberg. Sleep Heidelberg. Sun,14: Morning: explore Heidelberg if didnt see enough last night, or drive straight to Wurzburg in the morning. Rest of day Wurzburg. Sleep Wurzburg. Mon,15 Morning finish exploring Wurzburg or drive straight  to Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the morning. Return to Wurzburg for second night to sleep after nightmans watch tour in Rothenberg. Tue,16  leave Wurzburg and drive to Bamberg, walk around a few hours, until 12. Afternoon/evening drive to  Nuremberg while child sleeps. Afternoon/evening Nuremberg. Railroad museum for kids? Sleep Nuremberg. Wed,17 Morning drive to Playmobil park in Zirndorf for a few hours, opens at 9am. Around 1pm drive to Dinkelsbuhl for 1 hour? (or just skip this town?) and drive straight to  a hotel in Schwangau area.  Sleep Schwangau. Thur,18 SCHWANGAU-HORN/fussen: Neuschwanstein  castle in am. Afternoon drive to Garmisch partenkirchen (stop by Oberammergau? And Linderhof Palace?) . Sleep in Garmisch area.. Fri,19 garmisch partenkirchen:Not sure how to spend the day. Evening arrive to Munich , return car. Sat,20 Munich  Sun,21 Munich things to do: http://www.annees-de-pelerinage.com/50-amazing-things-to-do-in-munich/ Mon, 22 Munich Tue,23: Flight from Munich at 340 pm

Looks good if a bit hurried. Is your son good with constantly being on the move?
