Since there are so many castles and - in some cases - ruins thereof, all over Germany, I suggest you use google the name for each and every one that interests you. The opening times and even how to get there are typically displayed online.

Then if you have made a short list, post it with questions - if you have any - for people who have been to those particular locations.

Neuschwanstein (Ludwig's/Cinderella's Castle) is closed on Christmas eve/day and New Years eve/day but otherwise open year round.  Hohenschwangau is closed on Christmas Eve.  The Museum of the Bavarian Kings is closed December 21-24.

The three sites are adjancent to one another and can be toured in one day via a combination ticket.

Thank you all for the info.  We certainly cannot visit all the castle, but as long as those three are available, that would be great.  I checked out the website, PDHENRY, thanks.

Those were actually the ones I had been thinking of.  Are there others that I should consider?  Anything that particularly stands out to anyone?

It would help if you gave specific area/regions you're traveling to for us to make recommendations.  Pdhenry provided a response, which not knowing where you were going, turns out to have been correct.  But how you posed your questions  is why myself, Wally, and Yostwl gave you vague responses.  If I take your previous post in the Multi-Country section, sure, there are several.

I'm going to have to repeat myself but I really think you need to research your regions.  Furthermore, It is hard to tell someone where to go without knowing their interests.  I can recommend several in the regions you're going to: some are palaces, some are castles, some have different historic value, some are more heavy on art, some less heavy on art.  We really, really need more information about you in order to help you.

Let me provide an example.  Without knowing one's interests, one may suggest one to visit Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna (I used that as an example with the several regions you sort of listed in your previous thread, even though it is not in Germany).  But what if you would hate  ornate palaces?  I don't know that because you haven't told us.  What if ornate palaces is what you want to see?  I would need to know that in order to assist you better.  And let me tell you, there are some travelers who do not wish to see that stuff...my father for one, which is why I've had to eliminate Versailles from our upcoming trip to Paris.  Knowing this information is extremely helpful in assisting you in planning your itinerary.  Remember, it is your trip, not ours.

OK...... I like history.  I would LOVE to see Versailles if I were in France.  I guess I would say that I would like to see castles or palaces - I ike both - that are as much in their original state as possible.  I like to get the feeling of what it was like to live in that time.  We are more into the history than looking at art, I guess you could say.

We are thinking of Berlin & Munich, maybe driving the romantic rd & spending a few days in Bavaria for some winter fun & relaxation.  From what I can see there seems to be alot of interesting towns & things not far from Munich.  I hear the xmas market in Nuremburg is beautiful, so that's probably on the list.

Since you include "palaces" in your desiderata list, make sure you check out this one (click) in Würzburg!

I agree with Wally. The Bishop's Residenz in Würzburg is as good as it gets.
