Input on itinerary for six-week trip in September

by marymmiller »

My husband and I are planning to visit Greece from late Aug. through early Oct. 2018. We want to see as much as we can but at a pace where we don’t feel we’re rushing around “ticking boxes.” Our priorities are nature/beaches/ocean (snorkeling, SCUBA, sailing, swimming), local culture/food/wine/people, and historical sites. We’ve tentatively planned the itinerary below and would welcome any comments/suggestions about how to improve it. Thank you!

- Arrive ATH, stay at airport, travel the following day to Skopelos for 4 nights

- Return to Central Athens, stay 4 nights for sightseeing

- Drive to Peloponnese Peninsula and use Navplio as a base to explore the area for 5 nights

- Return to ATH and fly to Santorini for 3 nights

- Ferry to Milos for 1 night stay, then board sailboat for 7-night cruise around less-traveled Cyclades Islands

- Cruise ends in Paros, take ferry to Naxos for 3 nights

- Fly from Naxos to Rhodes (unfortunately connecting flight through ATH), stay in Rhodes/Dodecanese for 9 nights. We have friends on Rhodes so will spend part of the time with them and part on islands - any suggestions?

- Fly from Rhodes to ATH for 1-night stay before departure

That is a pretty darn terrific itinerary, hard to improve upon.

One idea you could explore.  What if you turned around the order of the Cycladic islands - start in Naxos, end on Santorini - and then took an overnight ferry from Santorini to Rhodes?  It only goes three days a week (I believe just after midnight on Monday - meaning you are not on Santorini on Monday - Wednesday, Friday - schedules may have changed).  But if it works with your time frame, you'd save spending a big piece of a day flying from Naxos to Rhodes, as you wake up around 8:00 in Rhodes.  A cabin is not that expensive, so you can sleep in a comfortable bed and take a shower while en route.

Other than that, I think your trip sounds wonderful and not rushed at all.  Have a great time!

Thank you so much for the input. We could easily switch Santorini and Naxos. Do you know how easy it is to get from Naxos to Milos? Our sailboat leaves from Milos on 15 Sept. and I'd like to get there on 14 Sept. so we aren't stressed about catching it.

Glad to hear the itinerary doesn't sound rushed. That was my biggest concern. I think this will be an awesome trip!

According to gtp.gr, there is a ferry every day from Naxos to Milos.  They arrive in Milos around 9pm, so you might want to go on the 13th and have a day for Milos before meeting your cruise.  Allowing an extra day when transiting around the islands is a good idea, as ferries are sometimes cancelled or delayed.

Schedules may change by September.

I would try to save the Athens and maybe Nafplion time for the tail end of the trip rather than coming and going through Athens all the time. How do you plan to connect to Skopelos? I guess flight from Athens to Skiathos then ferry to Skopelos? Then v.v to return to Athens? Returning to Athens airport from Skopelos, you could either take a flight to Santorini or Naxos or Rhodes to continue your islands part of the trip, or if the sailing trip influences your dates, you could hire a car at the airport and set off directly to Nafplion without backtracking in down town Athens. Visit NAfplion and surroundings, return from Peloponnese to the airport, drop car, flight to the islands. After visiting the islands return to explore Athens at the end of the trip. Safer to save a few days on mainland before your international fight just in case, rather than having a sea to cross. Saving on travel logistics without back tracking down town on several hops. Easier to appreciate Athens after having explore rest of Greece a bit. You'll be more familiar with Greek mentallity, having possibly see many historical sites and appreciate the Athens sites and especially museums much more. Visiting islands earlier on September rather than towards October is usually preferable in terms of weather, amenities available and ambiance too. Now how to plan your island time depends on specifics a bit. The Santorini-Rhodes ferry is a good suggestion. Milos deserves some days itsself too. Naxos more than 3 nights/2 full days too. Sailing trip is mostly for the sailing experience rather than exploring the islands. But there is so much one can do on a given time...
Sounds like a great trip, let us know how it goes...

Thank you for the suggestions. Will look at itinerary and see if we can make these changes work. Our friends in Rhodes have limited availability so this impacts the order we can do things.
